Masseter/jaw slimming injection

What is a jawline injection (masseteric injection)?

When someone has large masseter muscles, it can make their face look bulky. In some cases, it can also cause jaw pain because of teeth clenching.

Neurotoxins can be used to reduce the size of the masseter muscles, resulting in a slimmer appearance of the face and helping to stop teeth clenching. This procedure is called a masseteric injection or Slim Face injection, as it specifically targets the jawline to create a more slender look.

What is a V line injection?

V-line injection involves both slimming the width of the face and lengthening the chin. It usually involves:

Massteric injection to slim the face

Chin filler injection to lengthen the lower third of the face

fat dissolving

The end result is a V-effect.

Dr. Kim has written a paper on the V-effect in Asians, published in the Australasian Journal of Cosmetic Surgery in 2009, and is considered an expert in this topic.

What is the procedure?

  • Masseter muscle is identified.

  • A tiny microinjection of the muscle-relaxing medication is strategically injected into each masseter.

  • Over the next few weeks, Masseter muscles weaken. The weakened muscle will shrink leading to a slimmer appearance.

  • If you would like to achieve more effective V line, dermal filler can be injected into the chiin at the same time.

How long before seeing the result?

  • 1 week for muscle weakness.

  • In two weeks, you will start seeing the slimming effect.

  • 4-6 weeks for the maximum results.

How long does it last?

  • Slimming effect generally lasts 6-9 months.

  • Thereafter, your masseter muscle strength and the bulkiness will gradually return.

  • We recommend the Slim Face injection twice a year for best results all year round. After 3-4 sessions, once a year is usually sufficient for most people.

  • Individual variations exists.

What are the possible complications?

Complications are not common. But these are the possible complications:

  • Over-shrinkage of the Masseter muscle can make the cheeks look hollow. This will settle with time.

  • An asymmetrical smile that will settle with time.

  • Paradoxical bulging of the Masseter. You may need additional injection as this is usually due to unusually large Masseter muscles.

What other procedures are available to achieve a V-line face shape?

This depends on what is causing the square-shaped face. There are many causes. It can be due to bulky masseters, chubbiness (fat), loose skin, prominent jaw, or a short chin. There are various methods of producing a beautiful slimmer jawline.

  • Masseter injections can be used to shrink the masseters – as we discussed in this webpage.

  • Fat dissolving injections can be used to dissolve excess fat, or buccal fats can be removed surgically.

  • HIFU – Ultrasound Skin Lifting is used to tighten small amounts of loose skin.

  • Chin enhancement using filler injection or a chin implant

  • Combination therapy is used if the cause is due to a combination of the above.
