A wart, also known as a common wart or verruca vulgaris when on fingers or toes, is a small, raised growth on the skin. It usually appears on the hands and fingers.
Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which enters the skin through cuts or breaks, leading to the development of a wart. They can spread to other parts of the body, so it’s best to treat them early when they are small.
Common places warts appear include:

Let us demonstrate how it works
What is a wart?
A finger or toe wart, also known as a common wart or verruca vulgaris, is a small, raised growth on the skin that typically occurs on the hands and fingers.
Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, which enters the skin through cuts or breaks, leading to the formation of a wart. This means they can spread to other parts of the body and it is best treated early when they are small.

This patient had 6 areas of foreskin infected with warts. They were removed under local anaesthesia.

What are the treatment options for finger or toe warts?
Treatment options for finger warts include:
- over-the-counter medications like wart paint containing salicylic acid,
- cryotherapy (freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen),
- laser treatment,
- surgical removal
It is advisable to consult Dr. Peter Kim for a proper diagnosis and guidance on the most appropriate treatment for your specific situation.

Why do you treat warts with laser?
Over the years, we have attempted to treat warts using all the mentioned options. In our experience, warts typically have a deep root. Wart paints, prescription medications, and cryotherapy often do not penetrate deep enough to address the wart down to its roots, leading to frequent recurrence. This is why we prefer laser treatment for finger, toe, and plantar warts.
Surgery is a good option but it is too invasive for most people.
Laser is a good treatment because it can remove the wart in its entirety without the need for surgery.

Plantar warts, as well as warts on the fingers and toes, often extend deep into the skin. Laser treatment is effective in completely removing these warts.
What are the complications?
Skin treated with laser can potentially cause burns, scarring, and infection; however, these complications are rare.
While there is always a small chance of recurrence, Dr. Kim will re-treat recurrent warts at no additional cost.
The benefits of treating warts outweigh the downsides of leaving them untreated. It is best to address them when they are small, as smaller warts have a lower chance of complications and recurrence.

A large, 3-month-old plantar wart was treated with laser wart removal. The patient had attempted to treat it with acid, wart-removing ointments, and cryotherapy, none of which were successful and only resulted in making the wart bigger.
What is the procedure?
- Local anaesthetic injection to the wart
- Wart is treated with a laser
You can have a shower afterwards, but it’s essential to keep the wound clean with antiseptics and antibiotic cream for one week. The procedure typically takes around 10 minutes.
