How to Care for a Surgical Wound – Dr. Peter Kim

Postoperative care of a surgical wound is crucial for promoting healing, preventing infection, and minimizing complications.

1. Keep the wound dry for the first 48 hours. It’s advisable to avoid showering during this period.
2. After 2 days, remove the dressings and take a shower. Clean the wound under running water, gently using your fingers to remove any dried blood.
3. Dry the wound thoroughly using a towel and a blow dryer.
4. Keep the wound consistently moist with an antibiotic ointment; apply it 2-3 times a day.
5. You can leave the wound open or cover it with a simple dressing, such as a band-aid. Expensive dressings and waterproof dressings are not any better than a simple dressing.
6. If experiencing pain, take paracetamol. For stronger pain relief, contact Dr. Peter Kim.
   – Follow the prescribed pain medications provided by your healthcare provider.
   – Promptly report any unexpected increase in pain or discomfort.
**Activity Restrictions:**
Take it easy until stitches are removed. Stitches are usually removed after 1 week on the face and neck and after 2-3 weeks on the body. Avoid lifting heavy objects, strenuous activities, or movements that strain the wound.
**Monitor for Signs of Infection:**
The wound infection rate is approximately 1-2%. Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or the presence of pus. Report any of these symptoms, along with unusual signs like fever or chills, to Dr. Peter Kim.
**Follow-Up Appointments:**
   – Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.
   – Inform Dr. Kim of any concerns or changes in the wound healing process.
Remember, if you observe any complications or have concerns about your surgical wound, promptly contact Dr. Peter Kim. Immediate attention to any issues can prevent further complications and support a smooth recovery.
