Wart Assessment – Clinical Consultation (Sydney)

Dr Peter Kim is a registered medical practitioner with over 20 years’ experience in the assessment and management of skin lesions and minor skin conditions.

Warts are common skin lesions caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They can occur on the hands, fingers, toes, and soles of the feet (plantar warts). Some warts resolve spontaneously, while others may persist, spread, become painful, or interfere with daily activities.

This page provides general information about wart assessment. It does not promote specific therapeutic goods, devices, or outcomes.

What happens during a wart consultation

During the consultation, Dr Kim will:

  • Review your medical history and previous treatments (if any)

  • Examine the lesion(s) and surrounding skin

  • Discuss symptoms such as pain, bleeding, irritation, or spreading

  • Consider alternative diagnoses where relevant (e.g., corns/callus or other lesions)

  • Explain clinical considerations and possible next steps

If there is any uncertainty about the diagnosis, further assessment (including referral or biopsy) may be discussed.

Areas commonly assessed

Assessment may include warts located on:

  • Fingers and hands

  • Toes

  • Soles of the feet (plantar warts)

  • Other areas of concern (assessed case-by-case)

Discussion of management options

Management options vary depending on the location, size, number of lesions, duration, symptoms, and individual factors.

If appropriate, Dr Kim may discuss options that can include observation, topical therapies, cryotherapy, minor procedures, or other clinic-based interventions. Any intervention is discussed only after clinical assessment and informed consent, and may not be suitable for everyone.

Important considerations

Some lesions that appear to be β€œwarts” may represent other skin conditions. Assessment is recommended if a lesion:

  • Changes in appearance

  • Becomes painful, inflamed, or bleeds

  • Persists despite self-care

  • Spreads or multiplies

  • Causes functional problems (e.g., walking discomfort)

Risks and aftercare

If a procedure is undertaken, risks may include discomfort, blistering, infection, scarring, pigment change, delayed healing, and recurrence. The type and likelihood of risks depend on the lesion and the approach used, and are explained during consultation where relevant.

Fees

Consultation fees and Medicare-related information are explained at the time of booking or during consultation.
If a procedure is recommended, costs depend on clinical complexity (e.g., number, size, and location of lesions) and are discussed before any treatment is undertaken.

πŸ“’ Early Wart Removal = Less Scarring!
This thumb wart was treated with laser and successfully removed. However, after 3 months, a scar was left behind. Large warts, especially in high-movement areas like the thumb crease, can leave lumpy or itchy scars after removal.
πŸ’‘ The best approach? Treat warts early while they are still small to minimize scarring!
